SUBURBAN JOBLESS: Staffers at the newly opened unemployment office in Mission Viejo are working weekends to handle new claims by unemployed residents of South County. . . . The Employment Development Department office has received 1,518 applications for benefits since its Sept. 1 opening, with about 60% coming from unemployed professionals. . . . Staffers had expected more like 6,000 claims a year, but “at this rate we’ll handle twice that amount,” says assistant manager Jan Strand.
