WORKSHOP: The Burbank-Toluca Lake First Church of...

WORKSHOP: The Burbank-Toluca Lake First Church of Religious Science will sponsor a workshop at 2 p.m. Sunday by Dr. Mark Schoen on how the unconscious mind can affect a person’s health. Schoen is director of the Psycho-Immune Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Workshop participants will have a opportunity to experience hypnosis. Cost is $10. The church is at 260 N. Pass Ave. in Burbank.

DEDICATION: The dedication and presentation of the charter to the Central Glendale Church of Religious Science is planned for 5 p.m. Sunday at the Glendale Masonic Temple, 244 N. Maryland St. in Glendale. The charter will be presented by J. Robert Gale, chief operating officer of the United Church of Religious Science. The Rev. Michael Beckwith, vice president of the United Church of Religious Science District I, will install the church’s founding minister, the Rev. Jacqueline Johns and the church’s board of trustees. The church, which started in June, offers a regular 10:30 a.m. Sunday service at the Glendale Masonic Temple.

WELCOME HOME: St. Bernardine of Siena Church in Woodland Hills is inviting non-active or newly active Catholics to participate in its “Welcome Home Series” program. Participants will meet on Wednesday nights from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Oct. 7 to Nov. 18. The group is for those who have felt alienated from the church, troubled by the church’s teachings or recently returned to active participation after a long absence. The meetings will be in the double classroom of the church at 24410 Calvert St. Child care will be provided.

ANIMAL BLESSING: A “Blessing of the Animals” is scheduled Oct. 11 at the San Fernando Mission, 15151 San Fernando Mission Blvd. in Mission Hills. Participants are invited to bring their favorite animals. Mass will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by the blessing of the animals by Monsignor Weber, an art exhibit and presentation of a book on the history of missions. The festivities are in celebration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ discovery of the New World.

BISHOPS: Two Orthodox Catholic bishops, who are being consecrated in Minneapolis on Sunday, will be ceremoniously installed in Van Nuys on Oct. 11. The Rev. Monsignor David Leon Cooper of Van Nuys and the Rev. Father Miguel DeSoto of Eagle Rock are of the new Order of the Missionaries of Mercy, an ecumenical Orthodox Catholic and Independent Catholic Order serving nursing home patients. They have been serving as priests at numerous convalescent hospitals for several years and are officers of the Ecumenical Apostolic Chaplain Service. The installation is planned for 2 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church, 15520 Sherman Way in Van Nuys.

GOSPEL CONCERT: The Gospel Singers of the Scott United Methodist Church of Pasadena will perform a variety of traditional and contemporary gospel music at the First United Methodist Church of Glendale on Oct. 11. An inspirational message will be given by Robert Smith, superintendent of the Los Angeles District of the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. in the church at 134 N. Kenwood St. Child care for infants will be provided. Admission is free.
