Gulls Win Last Exhibition
The Gulls completed their brief exhibition schedule without a loss, scoring a 7-3 victory Friday night over the Phoenix Roadrunners at the Tucscon Convention Center.
In the two-game exhibition slate, the Gulls showed plenty of scoring balance. Ten players pitched in for 16 goals.
The Gulls led 2-1 after the first period, getting goals from Scott Arniel and Dale DeGray. San Diego’s John Anderson scored in the the second period, and Daniel Shank scored the fourth goal. The Roadrunners responded with two goals in a 14-second span by Sean Whyte to pull to 4-3 with 10:57 left in the game. Whyte had all three goals for Phoenix.
Forty seconds after Whyte completed his hat trick, the Gulls’ Perry Anderson scored, and the Gulls continued to add to their lead with a short-handed goal from Hubie McDonough and John Anderson’s second goal.
Rick Knickle went all the way in goal, stopping 20 of 23 shots.
The Gulls open the IHL season Friday at the Sports Arena against the Salt Lake Golden Eagles.
The Gulls beat Phoenix earlier in the week, 9-2.
