Cost of a Police Force in West Hollywood
As a retiree and a fairly new resident of West Hollywood, I was surprised to learn that West Hollywood does not have its own police department. I was even more surprised to learn that the Sheriff’s Department routinely discriminates against women and gays in a city as tolerant and progressive as West Hollywood.
I have looked carefully at the financial figures of both sides, and it is obvious to me that city officials are trying to scare voters by suggesting the need for tax increases or social service cutbacks if we establish our own police department.
Manhattan Beach, with a high influx of visitors, just like West Hollywood, spends only $7 million a year for a superb police force. Why would West Hollywood have to spend twice that much? It makes no sense.
It is clear to me that this progressive city should become a real city and have a real police force--one that is inclusive of all of its residents. I intend to vote Yes on Prop. AA.
