American Jews and the GOP

Share

I was shocked to read Abraham Sofaer’s analysis of American Jews and their relationship to the GOP (“Jews Have the GOP All Wrong,” Commentary, Sept. 24). Without debating the GOP’s support of Israel, which is lukewarm at best, American Jews are even more concerned about American issues.

The GOP surrounds itself with the likes of Pat Buchanan, whose anti-Semitic remarks are well known and who declares a cultural war. American Jews know that it is not their culture he defends. Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and the GOP platform support school prayer, are against pro-choice and obstruct AIDS awareness and prevention.

American Jews, who historically have seen the tragedy of limiting civil rights, morally and rightfully defend these rights. This is the reason that American Jews do not support the GOP, and not because we are “irrational” voters as Sofaer insultingly suggests.
