Washington Remains No. 1 in Polls : College football: No. 2 Miami gains little ground despite victory over Florida State. UCLA drops to No. 19 in Associated Press rankings after loss.

Despite its victory over Florida State, second-ranked Miami failed to gain much ground on No. 1 Washington in Sunday’s Associated Press college football poll.

Washington, which took over the top spot last week after Miami’s 8-7 victory over Arizona, received 42 first-place votes and 1,528 points after beating USC, 17-10.

Miami, which beat Florida State by 19-16 Saturday when the Seminoles missed a last-second field goal, got 16 first-place votes and 1,497 points from a nationwide panel of sports writers and broadcasters.

That means Washington (4-0) lost two first-place votes and Miami (4-0) gained four from the previous week. There had been speculation that Miami might close the gap more with a victory over Florida State, which had been ranked No. 3.

The Hurricanes will get another chance to impress voters next Saturday when they play at No. 7 Penn State. Washington will play No. 24 California.

Michigan (3-0-1) moved up one spot to No. 3 after beating Iowa, 52-28, and Tennessee (5-0) climbed three spots to No. 4 with a 20-0 victory over Louisiana State.

Texas A&M; (5-0) remained No. 5 after edging Texas Tech, 19-17. Alabama (5-0) jumped three places to No. 6 after beating South Carolina, 48-7.

Penn State (5-0) rose one spot to No. 7 after beating Rutgers, 38-24, and Florida State (4-1) dropped to No. 8 after losing to Miami for the seventh time in eight years.

UCLA and Ohio State had steep drops. The Bruins fell eight places to No. 19 after losing to Arizona, 23-3, while the Buckeyes plummeted nine spots to a tie for No. 21 after losing to Wisconsin, 20-16. USC is No. 20. Stanford (4-1) climbed seven spots to No. 11 after a 33-16 victory over Notre Dame.

Georgia Tech got a big boost, jumping six places to No. 17 with a 16-13 victory over North Carolina State. The Wolfpack fell four notches to No. 25.

California, unranked the past three weeks, rose to No. 24 after routing Oregon State, 42-0.

Mississippi State went from No. 24 to No. 18 after pounding Florida, 30-6, on Thursday night. The Gators plunged 10 spots to No. 23.

In the USA Today-CNN football coaches’ poll, No. 1 Washington received 38 first-place votes to No. 2 Miami’s 22. UCLA is No. 18 in that poll and USC is unranked.
