Whittier has granted $7,500 in emergency funds to the local chapter of the American Red Cross and the Boys and Girls Club of Whittier.

Each of the organizations had requested $10,000 to make up for reduced funding from United Way and other sources. The local Red Cross chapter said it lost $212,000 this year, and the Boys and Girls Club said it lost about $100,000.

The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to allow the Social Services Commission to dip into a $15,000 emergency fund to give $5,000 to the Rio Hondo Chapter of the Red Cross and $2,500 to the Boys and Girls Club.
