Near the End of the Road

Some 40 years in the planning, the 17.3-mile Century Freeway is inching closer toward its completion date of September, 1993. The freeway is one of the most expensive stretches of roadway ever built--$100 million per mile for a total of $2.5 billion. Some of the cost was for replacement housing for those forced to move out of its path.

The freeway will run from Norwalk to the eastern edge of Los Angeles International Airport, intersecting along the way four other freeways. The six-lane thoroughfare will feature two lanes for buses and car pools, as well as a light-rail line running down the median. Planners hope that the roadway, which traverses some of the poorest neighborhoods in Los Angeles County, will produce an economic boom in the inner city.
