LOS ANGELES : Officer Sues City, LAPD Officials Over Rape Case

Share

Los Angeles Police Officer Suzanne Campbell sued the city and several police officials Wednesday, accusing former Officer Ernest Hill of raping her at the Police Academy and alleging that the department--including former Chief Daryl F. Gates--mishandled her complaint.

“It is one of three cases like this involving LAPD policewomen to come to our attention, and indicates the department should seriously and intensely examine its methods of reviewing such cases, “ said Allan Parachini, a spokesman for the American Civil Liberties Union.

Campbell alleges in her Los Angeles Superior Court suit that her case was handled differently from the way a civilian’s complaint would have been, and that her supervisors discouraged her at every turn from pursuing the case.

She said that Hill followed her into a restroom after she and other officers had been drinking in September, 1990, and attacked her from behind. Hill, who was fired from the department in January because of the incident, has sued to get his job back, maintaining that Campbell consented to sex.
