Judicial Term Limits

Share

A full-page ad in the Oct. 1 Times dealt with the process of selecting federal judges, and noted that they serve for a lifetime. The ad stressed the need to consider this fact in choosing a President, and stated: “If President Bush is reelected, he and President Reagan will have named 90 percent of all our federal judges.”

However, the problem and the solution go beyond which presidents are elected. It is wrong for our country to be locked into the opinions and far-reaching decisions of judges who keep their positions for life.

The solution is to establish term limits for federal judges--including the U.S. Supreme Court--and thus eliminate their lifelong influence upon major issues in our society.
