The San Diego County district attorney's office Thursday charged jail escapee Johnaton Sampson George with slaying a motorist in the Gaslamp Quarter in addition to six other felony offenses.
George was charged with the murder of Michael Champion, and a special circumstance allegation that the murder was committed in the course of robbery.
This allegation means that George could be subject to the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole.
George also was charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of attempted robbery, battery of an officer and assault with a firearm.
Municipal Judge Nicolas Kasimatis signed an arrest warrant, ordering George to be held without bail.
Authorities are continuing the manhunt for George, who escaped from a sheriff's van while being transported Monday night.
