TCHAIKOVSKY: Symphony No. 6, “Pathetique”; “Romeo & Juliet.” Montreal Symphony, conducted by Charles Dutoit. London 430 507-2. For those who prefer their Tchaikovsky worn on the sleeve, this recording may be a little too cool. For those who prefer a more understated approach to the composer’s music, it’s not to be missed. Dutoit seems truly to play this orchestra, so controlled is every aspect of the performance. Yet never does the playing sound merely precise: There is a quiet point to the line and an unhurried sense of tempo--despite Dutoit’s generally quick choices--everywhere present. In fact nothing is forced; in this music that is a distinct pleasure.
