Events of the Coming Week

Today: Patricia Ireland, the president of the National Organization for Women, will attend a rally in Ventura for women candidates vying for offices representing Ventura County. The rally will be held at 7 p.m. at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Hall, 3994 E. Main St. For more information, call the Ventura-Oxnard NOW chapter at 655-5751.

Today: State Treasurer Kathleen Brown will make several appearances in the county on behalf of Democratic candidates. She will first attend a fund-raising brunch for Assemblyman Jack O’Connell (D-Carpinteria) from 10 a.m. to noon at the home of Joane and Nat Baumer, 6078 Bridgeview Drive, in Ventura. The cost is $50 per person. Reservations, though not required, may be made by calling 648-7155.

Today: State Treasurer Kathleen Brown will be the special guest at an afternoon fund-raiser for Democratic congressional candidate Anita Perez Ferguson hosted by Ojai architect Zelma Wilson. Monday: Roz McGrath, a Democratic Assembly candidate in the 37th District, will speak at 12:15 p.m. at Cal Lutheran University in classroom Nygreen 1. Tuesday: The Libertarian Party will introduce its candidates for the Assembly, state Senate and the House of Representatives at a 6:30 p.m. meeting at Round Table Pizza, 880 Arneill Road, in Camarillo. For more information, call Robert Jay at 495-8207.

Tuesday: The League of Women Voters Ventura County will sponsor a 7:30 p.m. forum on the city of Ventura’s Measure O, an advisory vote on a new water source. A panel from groups advocating a pipeline to the state water system and a desalination plan will make presentations and answer questions. The event will be held at Poinsettia School, 350 N. Tuesday: United We Stand--America, the volunteer group associated with independent presidential candidate Ross Perot, will host a forum for candidates in the 37th Assembly District. Democratic candidate Roz McGrath is scheduled to speak at 7 p.m., followed at 8 p.m. by Republican candidate Nao Takasugi. The meeting will be at the group’s offices at 475 W. Channel Islands Blvd., Suite 109, Port Hueneme.

Wednesday: The Port Hueneme Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a forum for candidates running for the Port Hueneme City Council and the Oxnard Port Commission. The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dorill B. Wright Cultural Center, 575 Surfside Drive, in Port Hueneme.

Thursday: Candidates for the Simi Valley Unified School District have been invited to a forum hosted by the Simi Valley Unified School District Special Education Advisory Committee. The forum is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Floyd Binns Room of the district offices, 875 E. Cochran St.

Thursday: The Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the League of Women Voters, will sponsor a forum for candidates competing for Thousand Oaks City Council. The forum will be videotaped for airing on TOTV (Channel 12) and Ventura County Cablevision (Channel 8). The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Thousand Oaks City Hall Council Chambers, 2150 W. Hillcrest Drive.

Friday: A forum for candidates in the 24th Congressional District, the 35th State Senate District and the 37th State Assembly District will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. at Amgen Auditorium, 1840 Dehaviland Drive, Newbury Park. The event is sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Thousand Oaks. For more information call 496-3211.

Friday: Friends of Dr. Manuel Lopez for Mayor of Oxnard are hosting a fund-raising “Murder at the Harbor” dinner from 6:30 to 10 p.m. at the Bahia Cabrillo Yacht Club, 4200 S. Harbor Blvd., in Channel Islands Beach. The event costs $25 per person. During the evening, a fictional murder will be acted out and clues provided. Saturday: Simi Valley Councilman Bill Davis will be the beneficiary of a $25-a-plate, fund-raising dinner with a western theme from 4 to 8 p.m. The event, featuring a country and western band and dance lessons will be held at 5495 Indian Hills Drive in Simi Valley. Saturday: Citizens Against Government Waste--Taxpayers’ Action Network of Ventura County will host a forum from 1 to 5:30 p.m. for candidates running for state and federal offices. The group has received commitments from most of the candidates in the 23rd and 24th congressional districts (1 p.m.), the 37th Assembly District (2 p.m.), the 35th Assembly District and the 19th State Senate District (3 p.m.), as well as Libertarian and independent candidates for the U.S. Senate (4 p.m.). The forum will be held at the Borchard Community Center, 190 Reino Road, in Newbury Park.
