WESTERN ATHLETIC ROUNDUP : BYU Turns Back Fresno State, 36-24

Fullback Kalin Hall scored two touchdowns, including the clincher with 1:11 left in the game, and Brigham Young defeated Fresno State, 36-24, in a Western Athletic Conference game Saturday at Provo, Utah.

Hall, who rushed for 157 yards in 20 carries, scored on a five-yard run in the final minutes after scoring for BYU on a 15-yard run in the first quarter.

Jamal Willis of BYU rushed 30 times for 129 yards and a touchdown.

BYU, 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the WAC, led 27-16 at halftime, but Fresno State (3-3, 1-1) closed to within 27-24 with 6:22 left in the third quarter when Lorenzo Neal scored on a one-yard run. Bulldog quarterback Trent Dilfer set up the score with a 56-yard run and a 29-yard pass play to Malcolm Seabron. Ron Rivers added the two-point conversion.

David Lauder kicked a 42-yard field goal to give the Cougars a 30-24 lead with 11:48 left in the game.

Utah 38, Hawaii 17--Frank Dolce ran for two touchdowns and passed for two more as the Utes trounced the previously undefeated Rainbow Warriors in a WAC game at Salt Lake City.

The Utes (4-1, 2-0) rolled up 478 yards of offense and capitalized on three turnovers in ending a six-game losing streak against Hawaii (3-1, 2-1).

Dolce completed 19 of 34 passes for 248 yards, and Pierre Jones gained 159 yards in 23 carries, including a four-yard touchdown run.

Travis Sims of Hawaii, who rushed for 125 yards in 10 carries, had a 66-yard scoring run that made it 21-17 with 13:48 left in the third quarter.

Dolce scored on a one-yard run, Chris Yergensen added a 36-yard field goal and Jones scored his touchdown as Utah pulled away.

Air Force 18, Navy 16--Punter Chris MacInnis kicked the first field goal of his career, a 38-yarder, with 49 seconds left to get the heavily favored Falcons past the Midshipmen in a nonconference game at Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Falcons turned to MacInnis because regular kickers Tyler Shedd and Matt Glover are a combined one for eight this season.

Air Force (5-1) has won its last three games by a total of nine points and had five victories last season decided by seven or fewer points.

Navy (0-5) trailed 15-10 with 10:25 left in the third quarter, but Tim Rogers kicked a 32-yard field goal to close the gap and added a 28-yarder with 4:58 left for a 16-15 lead.

Wyoming 35, New Mexico 21--Dwight Driver ran for a career-best 192 yards in 26 carries and scored twice as the Cowboys scored a WAC victory over the Aggies at Laramie, Wyo.

New Mexico (1-5, 0-2), which has lost seven consecutive games to Wyoming (3-3, 1-1), took a 21-13 lead on a 69-yard pass play from Stoney Case to Manley Woods early in the final quarter.

But Driver scored on a two-yard run and then had a 48-yard run to pull the Cowboys out of a hole and on their way to Driver’s second touchdown, a one-yard run.

Colorado State 42, Texas El Paso 24--Anthoney Hill threw four touchdown passes, including three to Greg Primus, and the Rams downed the Miners in a WAC game at Ft. Collins, Colo.

Hill completed 13 of 20 passes for 231 yards. Primus had seven receptions for 118 yards, including touchdown plays of 37, 23 and 12 yards.

The Rams (2-4, 1-2) took control with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, when tailback Leonice Brown had 134 of his 178 rushing yards.

He had runs of 24, 19, 29 and 60 yards in the quarter, but none went for a touchdown. Primus scored his third touchdown in the quarter and Van Ward had scoring runs of 13 and two yards.

UTEP (0-5, 0-3) took a 24-21 lead late in the third quarter on Raymond Lindholm’s four-yard scoring run.
