Orange Coast College got its first shutout against Golden West in 27 meetings Saturday, a 29-0 Mission Conference Central Division victory at OCC.

The Pirates (4-1, 1-0 in divisional play) opened the game with a trick play that resulted in a touchdown, then the defense dominated the rest of the way.

Golden West still leads the series between the teams 14-11-2 and has recorded four shutouts, including a 44-0 victory in 1982, which is the most one-sided victory in the series between the district rivals.

But memories of past victories were all Golden West was left with Saturday as OCC smothered the Rustlers (1-3, 0-1). Golden West crossed midfield only twice and got no deeper than the 43.

On the first play from scrimmage, Orange Coast quarterback Todd Mather and tailback Eric Washington started a running option play to the left, but Mather pitched to wide receiver Jason Hassay who crossed in front of Washington. Hassay, a converted quarterback, took the ball back to the right, stopped and threw to an open Ryan Blanchard who was at the Golden West 45. Blanchard caught the ball and went the rest of the way for a touchdown on the 70-yard pass play.

“We’ve had the play in for two weeks,” OCC Coach Bill Workman said. “I told (the team) Monday that if the field position was right we would use it on the first play. It was there and I got us going.”

Golden West’s offensive troubles started right away. On their first possession, the Rustlers lost three yards on three plays, but the Pirates were called for holding and Golden West decided to punt again, hoping to make OCC start deeper in the Pirates’ territory.

But the decision instead cost Golden West two points when the long snap went well over the head of punter Todd Gordon and OCC knocked the ball out of the end zone for a safety and 9-0 lead with 12 minutes 23 seconds left in the first quarter.

OCC sophomore Washington rushed for 128 yards in 21 carries and scored on runs of 33 yards in the second quarter and two yards in the fourth quarter. It was the third consecutive game in which Washington has rushed for more than 100 yards and the seventh in his career. The seven 100-plus-yard games ties Washington with Tony Accomando (1974-75) for the all-time OCC record.

Washington will have to wait until Oct. 24 to try to break the record when OCC travels to El Camino for a 7 p.m. game. The Pirates have a bye Saturday.

“We need a bye right now,” Workman said. “We’re pretty beat up. We’ve got a lot of walking wounded.”
