Rob Johnson and Johnnie Morton hooked up on three touchdown passes, and 20th-ranked USC’s defense sacked Oregon’s Danny O’Neil 13 times Saturday as the Trojans overpowered the Ducks, 32-10.

Curtis Conway chipped in with a school-record 96-yard punt return for a touchdown in the home opener for the Trojans, who ended a six-game losing streak against Pacific-10 Conference opponents. The Trojans (2-1-1 overall, 1-1 Pac-10) also snapped a five-game losing streak at the Coliseum.

The Trojans scored 17 points in the first seven minutes to take control against Oregon (3-3, 1-2).

Conway, a junior, stretched the lead to 17-0 when he fielded a punt at the USC 4, split the coverage up the middle and streaked past the final defenders en route to the end zone.

The previous record for a punt return by a Trojan was 93 yards by Ernie Merk in 1955 at Minnesota.

Johnson and Morton teamed up on a pair of first-half touchdown passes, a 36-yarder in the opening period and a 25-yarder in the second. They clicked again in the final period on a 22-yard scoring play.

The Trojans defense, meanwhile, was all over O’Neil, with Willie McGinest and Jeff Kopp logging three sacks apiece. USC also shut down Oregon’s running game. O’Neil still managed to throw for 229 yards, completing 22 of 32.

Johnson completed 11 of 16 for 125 yards and Morton had eight catches for 114 yards.

Oregon opened the door for the Trojans at the start of the game. The Ducks’ Sean Burwell fumbled the opening kickoff and Zuri Hector recovered for the Trojans at the Ducks 16. That led to a 32-yard field goal by Cole Ford.

Conway set up USC’s second score with a 35-yard punt return that moved the ball to the Oregon 36. On the next play, his first pass of the game, Johnson threw to Morton, who made a diving catch just over the goal line.

After Oregon was unable to move the ball on its next series, Conway took the punt by Tommy Thompson all the way back to stake USC to a 17-point lead.

The Ducks came back to score on their next series, with O’Neil completing 4 of 4 for 65 yards on a 75-yard march capped by a 14-yard TD pass to Anthony Jones.

Morton made another fine catch for his second touchdown, leaping up just behind defensive back Herman O’Berry and coming down with the ball just inbounds in the end zone.

Southern Cal tacked on a safety in the second period when an Oregon punt snap sailed over Thompson’s head and rolled out of the end zone.

Thompson’s 44-yard field goal for the Ducks was the only scoring of the third quarter.

The Trojans’ 13 sacks can’t be considered a record since the NCAA doesn’t keep that statistic.
