A 19-year-old man was shot in the head and critically injured Monday night during an altercation with a group of youths that was believed to be gang-related, police said.

Robert James Thomson, an Orange resident, was rushed to a hospital after the 7 p.m. incident behind a gas station at 883 N. Tustin Ave., Orange Police Lt. Timm Browne.

Thomson and a group of three or four friends were first accosted by another group of young men in their late teens at the Stater Brothers market on Collins Avenue, Browne said. After being chased to the adjacent gas station, Thomson was shot as he tried to get into his vehicle, Browne said.
