Former World Boxing Assn. heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs, scheduled to make a comeback this week, has been charged with buying cocaine from an undercover police officer in Jacksonville, Fla.

On Friday, Tubbs flew to Jacksonville from New Jersey, where he is in training, to face a warrant charging him with purchasing less than 28 grams of cocaine in May.

Tubbs, 34, was booked into the Duval County Jail and released on $3,500 cash bond pending his trial. Purchasing cocaine is a second-degree felony, punishable by up 15 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Tubbs is to fight Bruce Seldon at Harrah’s Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City Wednesday night.

Assistant State Attorney Howard Maltz said that although the alleged purchase took place several months ago, Tubbs was not initially charged because it was made during an undercover operation.
