The Nobel Peace Prize Committee is expected to name the 1992 recipient of the coveted prize in the Norwegian capital on Friday--although in some past years no award has been made.

A record 125 names have been put forward for this year’s prize, which carries a stipend of more than $1 million. Among the leading contenders are African National Congress leader Nelson Mandela; South African President Frederik W. de Klerk; former Czechoslovakian President Vaclav Havel; German Chancellor Helmut Kohl; U.S. peace negotiator Cyrus R. Vance; Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin; Israeli peace activist Shulamith Katznelson, and Guatemalan human rights activist Rigoberta Menchu. Another strong contender, Norwegian sources speculate, is the Salvation Army.
