THOUSAND OAKS : Planners Vote Down Road Link to Simi
The Thousand Oaks Planning Commission has voted to cancel plans for a road to link the city with the Simi Valley development of Wood Ranch.
The vote at Monday’s commission meeting was 4 to 0 to cancel the road. Commissioner Andrew Fox was absent. The issue now will go to the City Council on Tuesday.
Dozens of residents along Sunset Hills Boulevard, which would have been extended to Simi Valley, said the new road would cause a dramatic increase in traffic and create noise, pollution and safety problems.
A consultant has estimated that boulevard traffic would increase by more than 2,000% if it is extended, from about 1,000 to 22,000 cars a day, because Wood Ranch residents would use the road as a shortcut to California 23.
Laura Kuhn, deputy director of advanced planning for the city of Simi Valley, said an environmental statement prepared by Thousand Oaks was inadequate. She asked commissioners to delay consideration of the road, as requested by Simi Valley Mayor Greg Stratton, until the interchange between California 23 and the Simi Valley Freeway is completed next year.
Stratton said the new interchange will change traffic patterns and could make existing studies obsolete.
