California IN BRIEF : SAN YSIDRO : Extra Lanes Cut Wait at Border

Share
From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Immigration officials opened extra traffic lanes at the border crossing Wednesday in a one-day experiment meant to show that increased staffing at the border would eliminate long delays. The experiment was hailed as a success by commuters who crossed into the United States in minutes instead of up to an hour. Delays were expected to resume today. Lack of federal funding along with reluctance on the part of U.S. Customs to implement an automated commuter lane for frequent crossers mean the long waits probably will continue for some time. The Immigration and Naturalization Service opened 19 inspection booths Wednesday instead of the usual dozen.
