Arco Finds Oil in Beaufort Sea: Atlantic Richfield Co. said it struck oil at a test well in the Beaufort Sea off the coast of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Arco said it plans more drilling next summer in the 35,000-acre Kuvlum field to determine if the site could produce enough oil to make it commercially viable. The discovery, announced by Arco Alaska Inc., is the first one of significance in the eastern Beaufort Sea, Arco spokesman Al Greenstein said. Greenstein estimated that the Kuvlum field would have to contain at least 1 billion recoverable barrels of oil to justify the cost of building an undersea pipeline connecting the area with the existing trans-Alaska pipeline at Prudhoe Bay.
