COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Walker Out; Fien or Barnes to Start

Share

Freshman Ryan Fien or John Barnes, a senior transfer from UC Santa Barbara, will start against Washington State on Saturday at Pullman in place of quarterback Rob Walker, who will be sidelined two weeks because of a sprained left ankle.

Coach Terry Donahue said he probably won’t decide on a starter until after watching Fien and Barnes warm up before the game. Although Fien and Barnes split practice time this week, Fien took a majority of the repetitions with the first team during a 2 1/2-hour closed practice Thursday.

“I picked Fien over (freshman Scott) Fitterer for no objective reason, and we’ll pick Barnes or Fien, really, for no objective reason,” Donahue said.

Wide receiver Sean LaChapelle, who cracked a rib two weeks ago against Arizona, and defensive end Mike Chalenski, who underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb last Sunday, won’t make the trip but hope to play against Arizona State on Oct. 24 at the Rose Bowl. J.J. Stokes, a redshirt sophomore, will start in place of LaChapelle and redshirt sophomore London Woodfin will start in place of Chalenski. . . . Tailback Kevin Williams, sidelined because of a hamstring injury last week, practiced Thursday and might play against Washington State. . . . Defensive tackle Matt Werner, held out of practice this week because of a broken toe, will attempt to play Saturday.
