La Habra, Lopez Are Best on the Block to Beat Fullerton

La Habra blocked two punts, forced three other turnovers and held Fullerton to a 113 yards in offense en route to a 30-7 victory in the Freeway League opener for both teams at La Habra.

Alex Lopez blocked both punts, and on the second, he recovered it in the end zone for a touchdown that gave La Habra (2-4, 1-0) a 21-0 lead in the second quarter.

Fullerton also snapped the ball out of the end zone on another attempt to punt, resulting in a safety in the third quarter.

Jake Gomez had scored La Habra’s first touchdown on a 24-yard run with 2 minutes 57 seconds left in the first quarter.

Gomez capped La Habra’s scoring with a three-yard run late in the third quarter to give the Highlanders a 30-0 lead. Gomez finished with 144 yards in 19 carries. Gilbert Gorbea scored La Habra’s second touchdown on a 19-yard run.

La Habra, which snapped a three-game losing streak, finished with 233 yards in total offense including 180 in rushing.

Fullerton quarterback Keith Ginter was frustrated by La Habra’s defense the entire game. He was often throwing on the run and finished two for 12 for 13 yards with two interceptions. He was also sacked four times for minus 39 yards.

Fullerton’s only score came on a three-yard run by Cameron McMackin with 1:37 to play. McMackin, who also plays defensive back, had two interceptions for Fullerton (1-5, 0-1).
