I couldn’t agree more with your editorial (Oct. 8) criticizing Boxer for declining a statewide televised debate with Herschensohn. It seems clear that Boxer is scared to death that this campaign may turn to the issues, because she knows that even Californians are not as left wing as she is. Her campaign has been a lesson in how to be invisible. She does not even attempt to justify her 134 bad checks, her backing of the “midnight” congressional pay raise, her excessive absenteeism in Congress, her proposal to cut military spending in half, or the amount of taxpayer money she wants to spend on social programs. She’s just laying low and hoping to be swept into the Senate in this “Year of the Woman.” With her record, it is clear that she is no outsider.
