Glenn Foley threw four touchdown passes, three in the final four minutes of the first half, as No. 20 Boston College withstood a second-half Penn State rally and upset the No. 9 Nittany Lions, 35-32, Saturday.

Foley, who was recruited by Penn State Coach Joe Paterno three years ago, completed 21 of 37 passes for 344 yards as the Eagles (5-0-1) beat Penn State (5-2) for only the second time in 21 meetings. Boston College last beat Penn State in 1983 and had lost its 10 previous games at Beaver Stadium.

“It has to be the biggest thing that’s happened to Boston College in a long time,” Foley said.

Penn State scored two touchdowns during the fourth quarter and recovered an onside kick before the Eagles’ Joe Kamara intercepted Kerry Collins’ pass at the Boston College 17 with 1:33 to play to stop the comeback.

Boston College Coach Tom Coughlin said his team’s three quick touchdowns at the end of the half were “incredible” and added that he was surprised by the Penn State comeback.

“I was kind of hoping they would get depressed down, 35-10. You’d think they would get down,” Coughlin said.

It is the first time Penn State has lost consecutive home games in the same season since 1983. The Nittany Lions lost to Miami last week.

Penn State led, 10-7, with 6:37 to play in the half when Foley took over.

The Eagles, getting a midfield first down after a roughing-the-punter penalty, went on a nine-play, 72-yard drive, capped by Foley’s 48-yard pass play to Ivan Boyd with 3:59 to play.

Foley threw 16 yards to Pete Mitchell to complete a seven-play, 79-yard drive with 57 seconds remaining.

The Eagles got the ball back on downs and went 67 yards in five plays in 31 seconds. The touchdown came on a 29-yard Foley-to-Mitchell pass with a second to play, making the score 28-10 at halftime.

Penn State trailed, 35-16, during the fourth quarter when the Nittany Lions went 80 yards in 13 plays, capped by seven-yard pass to O.J. McDuffie from John Sacca with 7:21 to play. A Sacca-to-Mike Archie conversion pass made the score 35-24.

Penn State scored again with 1:39 to play when Richie Anderson ran in from two yards out. Collins, a reserve quarterback who hadn’t played a down all year, completed passes of 24, 41 and 19 yards on the seven-play, 90-yard drive. His pass to McDuffie for the two-point conversion made the score 35-32.

Kamara’s interception came on the first play after the onside kick.

McDuffie caught a personal-best 11 passes for 212 yards in his addition to a 43-yard reverse run.

Sacca completed 20 of 40 passes for 288 yards and one interception before a sore shoulder blade forced him to the sideline.

Boston College running back Chuckie Dukes carried 29 times for 149 yards, and Mitchell caught seven passes for 106 yards.
