Cal State Fullerton’s potential mutineers became road warriors Saturday night.

Danny Pasquil ran for a one-yard touchdown in the third quarter and Trendell Williams passed 27 yards to Steve Danzy with 53 seconds to play Saturday night to rally the Titans to a 14-10 victory over Southwestern Louisiana.

It was a game that almost wasn’t played. Fullerton players had threatened a boycott of this game because of uncertainty about the Titans’ football program.

“This is just a bunch of guys that want to play football. You know, we only have 33 scholarships, so these guys out here are wanting to play,” Coach Gene Murphy said.

“This is big for everyone who made this trip, for our team. There were a lot of folks who didn’t expect this to happen, maybe even some who made the trip.”

Fullerton improved its record to 2-5 and broke a 19-game road losing streak. The Titans had not won on the road since their 1989 season finale, losing all nine road games in 1990, all seven in 1991 and three this season.

Southwestern, playing without seven starters who were out because of suspension or injury, fell to 2-5 with its third consecutive loss and its first loss at home.

The teams fumbled 11 times between them. Fullerton lost three of its seven fumbles. Southwestern lost two of four.

Southwestern scored all of its points in the second quarter, on a 40-yard field goal by Richie Cunningham and a seven-yard run by Reggie Mayes with 16 seconds left in the first half.

Southwestern Coach Nelson Stokley said he was disappointed.

“I thought we were pretty much in control the first half, but didn’t do anything the rest of the game,” he said. “I won’t use our suspended players as an excuse. I thought our younger players stepped in and did a good job.”
