DIRECTOR’S CUT II
Thanks to Kenneth Turan for a fine article on the release of the director’s cut of “Blade Runner” (Sept. 13). However, in crediting those responsible for “Blade Runner’s” visual style, short shrift seems to have been given to Jordan Cronenweth, the film’s cinematographer, surely a major contributor in the creation of 2019. His starkly beautiful photography created a vivid, reverberating and chilling view of L.A.’s future.
Although the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences found five other 1982 films to honor for best photography, Cronenweth’s work was the most influential and imitated. Incidentally, the members of the British film academy did award Cronenweth and “Blade Runner” their award for best cinematography.
