Opposition to Welfare Measure

Share

Gov. Pete Wilson’s Proposition 165 would deny additional welfare payments to children who were conceived while their mothers were receiving aid. Wilson’s reasoning is that this will cause women on welfare to have no more babies and thus save the state money. If in fact that is what will happen, then Proposition 165 will be a success. As most reasonable people know, there will continue to be women on welfare who have babies. A very serious question that can be raised is what is going to happen to the babies who are born to women on welfare if Proposition 165 passes? How will the mothers be able to provide proper clothing, nutrition and medical care? It seems that it will be the babies that suffer under Proposition 165.
