SAN FERNANDO : Head Start Director Refutes Allegations
The director of the largest Head Start provider in Los Angeles County said Monday he was submitting evidence this week to counter allegations that his agency violated rules on the use of at least $200,000 in federal funds disbursed to operate the preschool program.
Ralph Arriola of San Fernando, executive director of the Latin American Civic Assn., said the documents he is giving to the Los Angeles County Office of Education will show proper use of the funds.
The association is the only provider of Head Start services in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, providing meals, medical service and lessons to about 1,800 children at more than two dozen centers.
County officials--who administer Head Start for the federal government--conducted an investigation of the association after receiving complaints from a Sun Valley parent.
In a report, investigators questioned several practices at the association, including the hiring of a consulting firm owned by Arriola’s wife. They have asked the association to respond to the report before taking any action.
