Salud-Poll Fight Nearing Fruition

Promoter Scott Woodworth said Tuesday he is close to an agreement that would match former world junior featherweight boxing champion Jesus Salud of San Diego against Jesus Poll of Houston Nov. 11 at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Salud (42-5), ranked second by the World Boxing Council and seventh by the World Boxing Assn., is trying to line up a title fight with WBA champion Wilfredo Vazquez of Puerto Rico. Poll is unranked but has a 24-5 record. The bout would be co-promoted by Top Rank Boxing and Woodworth’s Arena Boxing and would be shown on ESPN at 6 p.m.

The undercard would include light heavyweight Ernie Magdaleno of Orange County and San Diego middleweight Paul Vaden.

Woodworth also said he is close to signing a promotional contract with undefeated welterweight Oba Carr, 20, of Detroit.

BASEBALL

A local sports authority agreed to put up $21.5 million for a spring training facility in suburban Peoria, Ariz., that will be shared by the Padres and the Seattle Mariners.

The Maricopa County Stadium District had approved $11.5 million earlier, but Peoria sought additional money when Seattle’s interest developed.

The Mariners have agreed to train at the Peoria facility for 20 years, starting next year. The Padres will move to Peoria from Yuma in 1994.

GOLF

For the second year in a row, the Southern California Golf Assn. Four Ball Championship went to overtime to decide a winner and once again, the winning team included a member from the host course.

Craig Anderson of Fallbrook sank a two-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff at Rancho Santa Fe Farms Golf Club to complete a comeback as he and partner Bill O’Connor of Malibu overhauled John Lovett of Escondido and Ray Navis of Rancho Santa Fe to claim the title. Both teams finished with two-round scores of 134. O’Connor and Navis belong to Rancho Santa Fe Farms Golf Club.

Joe Simpson of San Diego shot an 80 and is at 162 after the second round of U.S. Senior Amateur Championship in Jupiter, Fla. Simpson is 11 strokes back of the lead.

Padre outfielder Tony Gwynn will host the second Harmon Contract/Tony Gwynn Celebrity Golf Classic at the Aviara Golf Club in Carlsbad. Among the celebrities appearing are Gwynn’s teammate Andy Benes, Cub pitcher Greg Maddux and former Charger Dan Fouts. The tournament will benefit Casa de Amparo, a crisis center for abused and neglected children.

VOLLEYBALL

Nikki Wallace broke the University of San Diego career kill record with nine in the Toreros’ 15-10, 15-2, 16-14 loss to visiting Notre Dame. Wallace, a junior outside hitter, has 910 kills. Angie Rais, who played from 1988 to 1990, held the record at 908. USD fell to 13-9, Notre Dame is 18-4.

UC San Diego fell at Chapman College, 15-5, 16-14, 15-5, in nonconference action. Laura Kranz had 14 kills for UC San Diego (6-14). Chapman improved to 14-9.

The U.S. men’s team lost to Japan, 9-15, 15-8, 16-14, 12-15, 17-15, before 10,771 in St. Louis. Bob Samuelson had a team high 41 kills for the United States, which won the five-game match series against Japan, 3-2.
