Motorola, In Focus Finalize Display Venture: Motorola Inc. and a small Oregon company called In Focus Systems have formed a joint venture, Motif Inc., to build flat-panel display screens for a variety of electronics products. As part of the agreement, Motorola will pay $22 million for a 20% stake in In Focus and will also invest an undisclosed sum in a factory to build the displays. The fast-growing market for flat-panel video screens based on liquid crystal display technology is now dominated by Japanese companies such as Sharp and Toshiba. But analysts say In Focus’ unique technology, called active addressing, could get U.S. industry back into the flat panel race.
