West Covina : Potbellied Pig Wins OK

Share

After listening to the owner of a potbellied pig describe her animal as quiet, smart, clean and easy to control, the City Council on Tuesday voted 5 to 0 to reverse a municipal code forbidding the animals in residential areas.

The council asked the Planning Commission to create an ordinance allowing potbellied pigs on a case-by-case basis.

The Planning Commission had previously recommended that the council continue to ban the pigs because only the one owner had expressed interest, there weren’t enough code enforcement personnel to enforce regulations and the granting of such a request could lead to more demands for exotic animals.

But council members agreed with the owner and several other speakers that the pigs would cause few problems. “If we hear it becomes a problem, then we’ll look at it carefully,” Mayor Nancy Manners said.
