The University of San Diego dropped a heart-wrenching, 3-2 decision to Santa Clara in a double-overtime men’s soccer match Friday night in front of 1,500 at Torero Stadium.

After regulation ended, 1-1, Chugger Adair scored his 10th goal of the season to give USD a 2-1 lead in the first 15-minute overtime period.

Grant Schick then responded by netting two goals in the second overtime period to give Santa Clara the victory.

USD, which was ranked 23rd in the nation in a coaches’ poll, fell to 10-4, 3-1 in the West Coast Conference. Santa Clara, the 1991 national runner-up, improved to 10-3-1, 3-0.

Brian Bradbury scored two goals in overtime to lift UC San Diego to a 4-2 nonconference overtime victory over Westminster, an NAIA school from Salt Lake City, Utah. Both of UCSD’s regulation goals were scored by Jarret Stevenson, the second coming off an assist from Eric Waldman.

Jason Ripley had the assists on both overtime goals.

The game was called because of darkness by officials at the end of regulation play but the game continued after it was explained that under NCAA rules, if the teams didn’t play the overtime, it would have been as though the game was never played.

UCSD’s playoff hopes, slim at best, hinge on getting as many victories as possible. They played on, and storm clouds actually lifted during the overtime, according to UCSD sports information director Bill Gannon, and it was lighter than it had been during regulation.

UCSD is 7-6-2, while Westminster fell to 13-3.

Andy Morrone scored the winning goal and added an assist to lift SDSU to a 3-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory over Nevada Las Vegas. Morrone scored on a second-half penalty kick after UNLV goalie Dan Schell was ejected after getting his second yellow card. Willie Franklin and Bill Demke also scored for the Aztecs (8-5-1, 2-2), and Aaron James had an assist.

UNLV is 7-4-4, 3-2.
