Turnovers Help Marina in Victory Over Edison

Share

For the second consecutive year, Marina outlasted Edison in a Sunset League defensive struggle.

Marina took advantage of two fourth-quarter Edison turnovers to rally for a 9-6 victory Friday night at Westminster High. Last season, the Vikings edged the Chargers, 15-12, giving Marina Coach Dave Thompson his first victory over Edison.

Edison’s mistakes helped Marina (4-3, 3-1) and Thompson make it two in a row. The Chargers (3-4, 1-3) held a 6-0 lead going into the fourth quarter, but hurt themselves with turnovers down the stretch.

Marty Sprong’s 41-yard field goal with 9:52 remaining cut Marina’s deficit to 6-3, Mike Byers recovered an Edison fumble for the Vikings at Edison’s 36-yard line with 8:12 left.

After two incomplete passes by Travis Anderson and an illegal procedure penalty, Marina was faced with a third-and-15 situation. But Anderson hit Tim Donegan for a 41-yard touchdown pass for what proved to be the winning score.

Sprong’s extra-point try was blocked, and Edison had two more chances to score. Danny De Lucca intercepted an underthrown pass by Edison quarterback Geoff Bell at the Charger 41-yard line, ending the Chargers’ last serious scoring threat.

De Lucca’s interception allowed Marina to run 4:45 off the clock.
