More Police for Los Angeles

I have been a staunch supporter of our Police Department. I too concur with the need for 1,000 more officers.
However, I strongly disagree with your stand (“More Police and Better Policing” editorial, Oct. 15). Proposition N is not the way to achieve our objective.
This is another continuous and deliberate attempt to get around Proposition 13. The cost for more officers should be incurred by everyone who benefits from police services--not just city property owners. During these recessionary times we must not burden them--especially, the unemployed and elderly single-family homeowners.
Indeed, there are more equitable ways to fund public safety. I propose to overhaul our entire city budgeting process.
Police, fire and paramedics must be funded first. Only after that we should budget for other city services. Now hundreds of millions of dollars go for nonessential and less important programs and services.
Believe me, it can be done. That’s why I am urging “no” on Proposition N.
