Sorry Only Hurts More

I deplore what Irish singer Sinead O’Connor did in attacking Pope John Paul II on “Saturday Night Live” (NBC, Oct. 3; L.A. Times, Oct. 6), but I also deplore what Patrick Buchanan said at the Republican National Convention in Houston.

I don’t feel that NBC is required to apologize to Catholics anymore than the networks and cable channels should be required to apologize to Americans offended and frightened by Mr. Buchanan’s remarks.

By restricting freedom of expression of those with whom we disagree, we ultimately restrict our own.
