Party for a Year of Quirkiness

Share

The Scene: The first-year anniversary party of Film Threat magazine, an irreverent gadfly glossy that rises monthly from the demimonde to tweak the film industry and champion all that is weird and cheesy. The celebration of anti-glamour took place Thursday at the “Blade Runner”-esque Hollywood Moguls coffeehouse. Parking meters were raffled as door prizes.

Who Was There: A broad quirky swath of the Hollywood fringe. Recognizable faces included Taylor Negron, Sally Kirkland, Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo (Fox’s “The Ben Stiller Show”), “Twin Peaks’ ” Log Lady Catherine Coulson and deposed “Ren & Stimpy Show” creator John Kricfalusi. Adding to the party’s cachet was a liberal sprinkling of avant-garde comedians, performance artists, musicians and independent film directors, such as roller-skating lounge singer Joey Cheezhee and comedian/performance artist/First Lady candidate Beth Lapides.

Most Exciting Celebrity Present--Not! A Wayne of “Wayne’s World” look-alike who prowled the party with not-so-look-alike sidekick Garth.

What They Were Wearing: Everything from pre-Halloween extravaganzas like rock drummer Sadisticka’s eye-popping bustier to shirts and ties. The dress code did veer toward the wild side, with the tattoo quotient running at about 30%.

The Cuisine: As low-rent as a late-night horror movie. Well-dressed women circulated with trays full of thick salami sandwiches with mayonnaise and school-cafeteria-green gelatin dessert (in honor of the band Green Jello whose members, including Sadisticka and Cow God, were on hand). Generic wine and vending machine cheese-and-crackers were available at the buffet, while the bar served Death Vodka mixed drinks and Bud. There was a log-shaped cake in honor of Log Lady Coulson’s birthday.

Other Weird Touches: “The Mausoleum of Dead Celebrities,” a room festooned with posters of Jean Harlowe, Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Mansfield and “Still Tough Guys” Humphrey Bogart, Steve McQueen, Montgomery Clift and John Wayne. There were also pinatas in the shape of a cop, a film critic and a movie publicist (the cop was filled with doughnuts) for guests to skewer. Signs designated “No Schmoozing” zones and “Casting Couch.”

Entertainment: Music by the Screamin’ Lederhosen, sound-track band for “The Ren & Stimpy Show.”

Quoted: “This place brings out the craziness in people in a fun kind of way,” said actress Sally Kirkland, whose nonstop vamping kept the flash units popping. “It reminds me of the happenings we used to do in New York in the late ‘60s.”
