Benefit Cuts

If some people still think that President Bush and the Republicans care about AIDS and cancer victims or any other catastrophic problem besetting the American people today, all they have to do is read “Firms May Cut Ill Workers’ Health Benefits, U.S. Argues” (Oct. 17).

For the first time in my 63 years, I am ashamed to be an American because once again it seems that profit is more important than people. How can we call ourselves a “nation under God” when we are manifestly a “godless nation”?

When business does not live up to its responsibilities, it increases the load on government services and taxpayers; then government is blamed for being “too big.” I say it’s not only time to quit subsidizing business, it is time for total reform in our governing, corporate and political systems.
