COLLEGE FOOTBALL: DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Barnes to Start Against California

Share

Quarterback John Barnes, who transferred to UCLA last spring after UC Santa Barbara dropped football, will start Saturday’s game at California.

Freshman Ryan Fien, who started last week’s 20-0 loss to Arizona State in place of injured redshirt freshman Rob Walker, will be out indefinitely with a strained hip.

Walker, who started four games after Wayne Cook suffered a season-ending knee injury in a season-opening victory over Cal State Fullerton, has sat out the last two games because of a sprained left ankle. Although Walker hopes to return this week, Coach Terry Donahue said he doubts he will be able to play.

Scott Fitterer, a freshman from Kennedy High in Seattle, will back up Barnes, who has completed 11 of 20 passes for 132 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions.

Tailback Kevin Williams, who has missed two of the Bruins’ last three games because of a hamstring injury, is expected sit out Saturday’s game, and linebackers Brian Tighe (shoulder) and Chris Sanchez (pinched nerve) are doubtful. . . . After the Bruins gave up 13 sacks in three games, Donahue altered the lineup against Arizona State, starting freshman Jonathan Ogden at left tackle in place of Craig Novitsky, who started at left guard in place of Ron Nielsen.
