A gunman in a car opened fire on a 15-year-old Anaheim boy Tuesday, in what police are calling a gang slaying.

Police said Francisco Hernandez was standing near the corner of Mountain View and Orangewood avenues about 1:30 a.m. when a car with three people drove up. The car’s occupants asked where Hernandez was from and then fired at him five or six times, Lt. John Cross said. It was not clear whether he responded to the question, said Sgt. Chet Barry.

Paramedics took Hernandez to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he died about 5:30 a.m., Cross said.

Investigators said gang members sometimes ask their intended victims where they are from or what gang they claim, Cross said.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting, and investigators did not have a detailed description of the car or the killer, Cross said.

“We’re doing a lot of interviews” to determine what may have lead up to the shooting or what happened as the car drove up to Hernandez, Barry said.

The slaying, in a southern section of the city plagued by gang violence and drugs, was the 34th this year in the city, Barry said. The previous record was 30 in 1989, Barry said.
