IBM Computer Chip Forecast: An IBM official said the company’s commercial computer chip business will achieve annual sales of “several hundred million dollars” within the next several years. International Business Machines has long been the world’s largest chip manufacturer, but the vast majority of those chips were used in its own products. Last year, the computer giant formed a chip division, IBM Technology Products, to boost sales to outside customers. IBM Vice President Michael Attardo, speaking at the annual Semiconductor Industry Assn. conference in San Jose, said IBM does not intend to be a major player in commodity products, such as memory chips, though it will supply such products to major customers who want them. Instead, IBM will focus on supplying more sophisticated multi-chip packages to big computer companies.
