Monterey Park : Drunk-Driving Program

The Police Department will set up random sobriety checkpoints throughout the city beginning Friday in a state-funded program to curb drunk driving.

The state Office of Traffic Safety awarded a $13,000 grant to the department for a sobriety checkpoint trailer. Using that equipment, officers will periodically stop motorists at undisclosed locations and look for signs of intoxication, police said.

The last three traffic deaths in the city involved drunk drivers, authorities said.
