City Council Asks Study of Cost of Christmas Tree Recycling
The City Council has postponed a decision on choosing a contractor for the city’s third consecutive Christmas tree recycling program because of concern over the cost.
The council asked the city staff to look for a local company that could collect and chop the trees for less than the $4,500 asked by the recommended firm, West Coast Arborists of Buena Park. The proposal will be considered again Nov. 2.
Should the program be approved, residents will be able to bring their trees, at no cost, to the parking lot across from Memorial Park at Foothill and La Canada boulevards from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, Jan. 1, 9, 15 and 22, and Sundays, Jan. 2 and 10.
The tree remains will be taken to the Scholl Canyon landfill, City Manager Gabrielle Pryor said.
The City Council has also voted unanimously to discontinue the annual “Spring Clean” program, in which trash haulers picked up large household items such as refrigerators, to prevent recyclable items from ending up in the landfill.
Such items should be left exclusively during the annual Spring Recycling pickup conducted by the Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul, Pryor said.
