GTE California said this week that it will make a total of $2.4 million available for riot relief.
The phone company’s aid package includes computer-aided education programs for 15 Los Angeles and Long Beach schools, annual grants of at least $300,000 for the next five years to community groups in riot-torn neighborhoods, $250,000 worth of advertising in ethnic media and the construction of a $100,000 GTE supply center in South-Central Los Angeles.
GTE also said it will increase its deposits in minority-owned banks in the area. The company already has a total of $2 million on deposit at 23 such institutions in California.
