Five candidates are running for three seats on the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District board. Julia A. Brownley, 39

Brownley is a parent who put her career in corporate marketing management on hold to be a full-time parent. PTA treasurer at Grant Elementary School. Member of the district’s health advisory committee. Wants to re-examine how the $75-million, capital improvements bond passed by voters in 1990 is being spent.

Neil Carrey, 49

Carrey is a business and tax attorney. He also is a lecturer at USC’s dental school and in its classes for paralegals. Chairman of a community health advisory committee. Member of district school-based health center committee. Co-treasurer of Lincoln Middle School PTA. Coaches Little League. Says the district needs better fiscal leadership.

Margaret R. Franco, 37

Franco is a counselor at El Camino College. She is also program director of the state-funded Puente Project, a writing and mentoring program for at-risk Latino students. Member of Lincoln Middle School PTA. Board member of Third World Counselor Assn. Supports providing students with equal opportunities in education.

Mary Kay Kamath, 59

Kamath has been a school board member for 12 years. She is a school board representative on the Elected Delegate Assembly of the California School Boards Assn. and a university program evaluator for the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Peggy Lyons, 57

Lyons is an educational researcher. She has served on the board for nine years. Former elementary school teacher. Serves on an evaluation team for the state Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
