S.D. County’s Jobless Rate Declines a Bit

Thanks to seasonal factors, San Diego County’s unemployment rate eased to 7.6% in September, down from 7.9% in August. But the rate is still relatively high: the previous year, it was 6.1%.

Total jobholders in the county totaled 949,600 in September, up slightly from 947,100 in August. The total of unemployed residents in the county declined to 91,500 in September from 97,000 the month before, according to the state Employment Development Department.

The state attributed the decline in joblessness to seasonal increases in trade, government and manufacturing jobs. The local rate is better than the state’s 9.2% unemployment rate but worse than the nation’s 7.2% jobless rate.

The county’s employment base continues to register job losses in the services and construction sectors.
