San Diego : Judge Denies Bid to Lower Man’s Bail

Share

After an outburst from two of the victim’s relatives, a judge refused to lower bail for a Mira Mesa man accused of shooting to death a 17-year-old boy.

Municipal Judge Robert McDonald said $250,000 was reasonable bail for Charles F. Baker, 39, who is charged with murder.

Though attorneys on both sides disagree strongly about the details, it is clear that Baker confronted Robert Kennedy Toman and two friends about 2:15 a.m. Saturday. When the incident was over, Baker quietly turned himself in to authorities as Toman lay dying from a bullet wound to the head.

Defense attorneys asked that Baker be released on his own recognizance so he could continue working at home as an auto mechanic and assist in preparing his defense.
