NHL ROUNDUP : Lemieux Leads Penguins to 5-4 Comeback Victory

Mario Lemieux scored two goals to extend his goal-scoring streak to 12 games and Kevin Stevens also scored twice as the Pittsburgh Penguins rallied to defeat the expansion Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-4, Sunday night at Tampa.

Lemieux, the NHL’s scoring leader with 18 goals and 20 assists, got what ended up being the winning goal on a power play at 14:43 of the second period when he beat former teammate Wendell Young for a 5-3 lead.

Lemieux’s streak is four games short of the NHL record of 16 set by Harry Broadbent in 1921-22. Lemieux is tied with Cy Denneny and Dave Lumley for the fifth-longest in NHL history.

But Lemieux isn’t concerning himself with the streak. “It’s something I don’t think about too much,” he said. “I don’t want to put any extra pressure on myself.”

The Lightning, which overcame Lemieux’s first goal to take a 3-1 first-period lead, made it 5-4 midway through the third period when Rob Ramage scored during a two-player advantage power play. But Tampa Bay was unable to prevent its fourth consecutive loss, all by one goal.

San Jose 4, Chicago 4--Dean Evason’s goal with 8:14 remaining in regulation at Chicago gave the Sharks the tie.

Evason picked up a loose puck and beat Ed Belfour from five feet to give the Sharks a point after they had blown a 3-1 lead. San Jose tried to turn up the pressure in overtime, outshooting Chicago, 8-1, but was unable to beat Belfour.
