NORTHRIDGE : Literacy Center to Receive Funds

Share

The Times Mirror Foundation has pledged to give $100,000 over four years to help fund a literacy center at Cal State Northridge, campus officials said Monday.

The center, which will be housed in a new business and education building now under construction, will teach adults and children how to read, said Sandra Klasky, development director for the school’s Department of Education.

“Obviously there is a natural tie-in between a newspaper and a literacy center, but it is clearly in everybody’s interest to have a literate constituency,” said Klasky.

Graduate students and their professors will design and operate the reading programs at the center. The Times Foundation money will be used to purchase computers and other equipment, as well as publicize the center to attract potential students.

The Times Mirror Literacy Center is expected to open in 14 months, Klasky said.
